I’m pretty sure birds are creating new songs. This evening I walked out to an unusually still Dartmoor wafting the scent of hawthorn and carrying the fullness of green after rain. And the lambs were calling to the sheep and the cows were calling in the distance. The valley has so much sound in it.
As evening grew closer to sunset the singing of the birds rose towards the night. Their singing is so different from each other – reedy, fluted, dense, rhythmic, swooping, chuttering…and so fullhearted. There are cuckoos, blackbirds, chiffchaffs, finches, robins, thrushes, buzzards…
They’re like a choir singing entirely distinct songs together for the joy of it. Everyone gets to have a go. Their singing is falling into, stretching and delighting my ears into new possibilities. I’m amazed by the beauty and range. Sitting peacefully on a rock in the rose and gold sun, saturated in sound and hearing the clarity of each bird I am blissed out happy.
Kept saying thankyou all the way home. Wondering if we can have the confidence to sing like that;our individual songs rising up together.
ps Like I said, I’m pretty sure some of the birds are experimenting and creating new songs. I’m hearing it particularly in the early morning when I wake…Evolution.
